Feasibility Study of Arkari Gol Hydropower Project (99 MW)
Overview
First investigated in a 1988 SHYDO/GTZ regional power study, the Arkari Gol scheme sits on a tributary of the Lutkho River near Shogore, with a 20 m high concrete-faced rockfill dam creating a 1.06 million m³ reservoir. The optimised design delivers 378 GWh/year, including 139 GWh during four hours of daily peaking, at a firm capacity of 99 MW.
The scheme’s design includes a 5,600 m headrace tunnel with a 4.15 m diameter feeding a 296 m vertical pressure shaft and 494 m pressure tunnel to a surface powerhouse housing three 33 MW Pelton turbine-generator sets, connected to the national grid via a 132 kV switchyard.
In joint venture with Germany’s IEGHD, CIV Tech Associates delivered hydrological modelling, sediment and seismic analysis, field survey supervision, and preparation of the PC-I and feasibility reports.

Implementation Approach

The Arkari Gol feasibility study confirmed a viable 99 MW hydropower resource on the Lutkho River system, addressing chronic power shortages in Chitral’s remote valleys.
